Gardening club: From little seeds come mighty trees

Autumn is here!

Every Thursday afternoon, the wonderful members of the gardening club meet in the courtyard ready to head outside, rain or shine, to rewild our school environment. The past few weeks have been all about harvesting our huge crop of tomatoes, carrots, peppers, nasturtiums and tending to our crop of squash.

Last year, we worked with a professional gardener, Ella Khafaji, who gave us some excellent techniques on how to sew in the space we have. We identified that the space along the wall near the front of the school is very sunny in the summer and the wall traps the heat. This is amazing as it gets really hot and the crop of tomatoes was akin to the Mediterranean. This gives us hope to grow olives, lemons and grapes.

The tomatoes were shared out amongst the members of the gardening club, staff office spaces and we had an abundance left which were used to make delicious lasagnes in Y10 Food Technology. Our gardeners are strengthening their knowledge of growing food, getting used to getting their hands dirty and improving their mental wellbeing by joining in with our outdoor activities. This week we were able to harvest ONE carrot. Which is 100% more than we had last year. We look forward to planting more spring bulbs and continue the growth of our gardening club.

New students are more than welcome to join our club. Any parents and carers who would like to be more involved in rewilding our landscape, build our community network, or know of any hidden gardening gems that we should visit, please get in touch.

Finally, we are looking for the following donations;

Wellies
Gardening gloves
Bird feeders
Plants, seeds & bulbs

Thank you all for your support.
